Everything I do, everything I am – it’s all here. I’m a self taught illustrator and photographer who dedicates considerable time travelling to far flung places. I also write satirical anecdotes along the way.
This site, just like my life, is a work in progress. I’ve been contributing to it for over 10 years – it’ll never be complete. That’s the whole idea. It represents a lot of hard work and a pretty big chunk of my life. I hope that’s visible in the thousands of photographs from all over the world; the 7 years of writing; the dozens of entirely hand rendered theatre posters; the gigantic dystopian cityscape that took 4 years to finish; and the new series of political illustrations I’ve just completed.
I no longer view my career as trying to get ‘here’ or ‘there’. Those destinations don’t exist. It’s more about uncovering new skills, creating new experiences and continuing the story. Three years ago I was neither an illustrator or a photographer. It was only by travelling to the countries no one else visits that I discovered I had a skill for connecting with people abroad (and taking photos of them). And it was only by quitting work and spending 4 months locked in a cabin by the beach in Australia that I discovered I could transition away from Graphic Design towards Illustration. Both these skills would be lying dormant within me if I didn’t think to search for them. I now want to see what else is in there. I believe that we all have special talents lying somewhere within us, we just need the right attitude, environment, circumstances and people to uncover them. As well as a willingness to extract ourselves from our comfort zone.
I’m currently in London working on turning my writing into an illustrated book, as well as freelancing at my favourite ad agency. In October I’ll head to the Holy Lands and Ethiopia to do what I do best. If you want to get in touch, please do – I’d love to hear from you.
